“Hi there, I’m glad you made it! In the magazine this month we talked about visual art. As you SAW, visual art is more than just what meets the eye. Painting, photography, and drawing are really cool common forms of visual art. We also saw that visual art can be three-dimensional, too. Three-dimensional art is called ‘plastic art.’ Familiar forms are sculpture or paper folding. It also can take on some pretty unusual forms! Post-it® Notes are just one unusual possibility, as we saw in the magazine! *1

“If we learn a little more about visual art, we can decide which kinds we like the best. Then we can put on our smocks, goggles, and gloves as we turn loose our creativity and imagination!”

Here is an important fact about visual art to understand before we do our challenge. Visual art can be abstract or representational. Here are the definitions of these very different styles of art.

Representational art

When you look at a representational painting, for example, it is easy to recognize what you are looking at. Here you clearly see a picture of a moth. *2






abstract

Pure abstract art

In pure abstract art, the “subject” is color, line, and shape instead of recognizable forms or a picture you can identify. This is called “pure” abstract art. It does not represent or show any “real thing.” *3

“Abstracted” objects

A second form of abstract art uses objects that have been “abstracted” (taken) from nature. Although what you see may not look realistic, it is close enough that you can, at least, get an idea of what you are looking at. Check out this “HAND PAINTED” eagle.

Here's one more form of art you may not know is visual art! Do you like to cook yummy dishes with your family in the kitchen? For all you cooks out there, check out the following visual art. Culinary art – the art of cooking (not just creating tasty dishes but VISUALLY appealing representation of dishes).

Art is all about passion and style! Try your HAND at one form or combine some forms to create your own signature style of visual art! I narrowed it down to a few. Here are four to choose from:

  • Painting: any type of paint – oil, acrylic, watercolor, tempera, etc.
  • Drawing: charcoal, crayons, pencil, markers, etc.
  • Sculpture/ceramics: clay, Play Doh, snow, sand etc. Use your imagination!
  • Architecture: design and build a structure using anything you can connect or stack!
